I just want domination of one major American city! Is that too much to ask for?
~ Koga Shuko in the Double Dragon film

Koga Shuko, formerly known as Victor Guisman, is the main antagonist of the 1994 live-action martial arts fantasy film Double Dragon. He was portrayed by American actor Robert Patrick.

Shuko also appears as the final opponent in the one-on-one fighting game Double Dragon, originally released on the Neo Geo arcade/console, which is loosely based on the movie.

History[]

Koga Shuko is the dictator of all evildoers running rampant in Bloody Town. He is a wealthy businessman and former crime lord seeking to get his hands on the fabled "Double Dragon" medallion, a mystical amulet said to grant great power to those who possess it. He is a martial arts master with near invincible strength, who seeks to have complete control over all the street gangs of New Angeles.

Years ago, then crime lord Victor Guisman ordered a raid on a village located in a remote region of China, in search of the medallion. His henchmen succeeded in obtaining only one half of the amulet, leaving Guisman with the pending task of finding the other one so he could one day achieve ultimate power.

Now in present times, and going under the alias of "Koga Shuko", Guisman has risen to power as a wealthy executive, having great influence in the post-apocalyptic city of New Angeles. He commands most of the street gangs in the city and seeks to consolidate his power by gaining total control over them.

One of his henchmen, named Bo Abobo, manages to learn the whereabouts of the other half of the medallion, which happens to be in possession of Billy Lee, a teenage martial arts practitioner who lives alongside his older brother, Jimmy.

With this information, Shuko, accompanied by a group of his best men, arrives at the abandoned theater where the Lee brothers live under the care of a kind but courageous woman named Satori Imada. A fight ensues between both groups and Satori ends up sacrificing herself in order to allow her two protégés to escape (the theater explodes with her inside due to Shuko's doings).

In his obsession to obtain the other half of the medallion, Shuko orders all of the street gangs of the city to go on a manhunt to find the Lee brothers. After various chases, fights and miraculous escapes, Shuko ultimately manages to get possession of their half of the medallion. The brothers confront him in a final showdown in his own office building. Having reunited both halves of the amulet, Shuko transforms into two mystical "shadow warriors" who battle the Lee brothers. However, each brother manages to retrieve one half of the amulet, get the upper hand with their new acquired powers, and finally defeat Shuko. The police arrives shortly afterward and he is arrested and taken away.

Double Dragon (Neo Geo)[]

Shuko becomes a playable character by the use of a special code.

Personality[]

Like his film counterpart, Shuko is a ruthless dictator and is very antagonistic toward the main playable characters. He insults the Lee brothers for being weak and Cheng-Fu for being a huge disappointment and strictly tells him to leave, and he does not care to fight women, as seen in his win quote against Rebecca. He warns Eddie about what would happen if he fights against him. Shuko also has a notable rivalry with Amon and he wonders if he can fight next after him. This win quote is also used against his mirror self.

Trivia[]

  • One of Shuko's moves, called "Kirin" or "Shadow Attack", has him turn into a shadow, go under his opponent and then unleash a flurry of attacks; this is identical to a move used by the Double Illusion in Double Dragon II: The Revenge.
  • While Koga Shuko is of European descent in the film, in the fighting game continuity, he appears to be of Asian descent (similar to Duke).
